Do you have an event coming up that you’d enjoy more if you lost a few pounds? A high school reunion, wedding, or vacation are all common reasons to try a fad diet. The problem is, fad diets don’t work. Here’s what you can do instead, and the bonus is that it will provide long-lasting results.
Dr. Latisa Carson at Uniquely Fit Medical Weight Loss has helped many former fad diet failures find what works. You can expect to lose weight, appropriately and safely, and more importantly, for the long run, when you work with her.
How do I know if it’s a fad diet?
Fad diets can sometimes be difficult to identify, especially if they are promoted with “scientific evidence.” However, there are a few hallmarks you can look for.
Fad diets almost always work for a little while because of extreme calorie restriction. If you’re only eating cabbage or grapefruit, you’re not consuming many calories. The same is true of juice diets, and most other fad diets.
You’re going to lose weight if you’re consuming very few calories each day, but the problem is, eventually you’re going to go back to eating normally. If you’re overweight or obese, “normally” may mean too many calories for good health. Whether you’re eating too few or too many calories, you’re not consuming a healthy amount.
Another common problem with fad diets is that they restrict you from eating whole categories of various foods. For example, one fad diet is the “blood type diet” which claims that your blood type determines what you should and shouldn’t eat. For each blood type, whole categories are removed, whether it’s meat, corn, legumes, or others.
A healthy diet is usually a balanced diet that includes food from a variety of sources, including vegetables, fruits, proteins, grains, and healthy fats.
Just about any diet that makes huge promises of fast weight loss should be viewed with skepticism. If it seems too good to be true, it very probably is. Healthy weight loss is usually much slower than you’d like it to be, but unlike fad diets, healthy weight loss is long-term weight loss.
How to get out of the fad diet mentality
If you’ve been struggling to lose weight for any length of time at all, you’ve likely tried a few different fad diets. In fact, fad diets may seem like the best way to lose weight because we tend to think that weight loss must include deprivation.
