Obesity Q & A

What is obesity?

Obesity is a medical diagnosis that indicates your body has too much body fat. Dr. Carson uses the body mass index (BMI) to diagnose obesity. BMI is a calculation that uses your weight and height to assess body composition.

BMI classifications include:

  • Underweight: BMI equal to or less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI 19 to 25
  • Overweight: BMI 25 to 30
  • Obesity: BMI greater than 30

Though BMI is effective for assessing body fatness, it isn’t ideal for everyone. It’s possible for certain individuals, such as bodybuilders, to have a BMI that indicates overweight or obesity but not have the excess body fat associated with obesity and the health risks.

What are the health consequences of obesity?

In addition to being a disease itself, obesity increases your risk of developing other health issues. Some of the most common health consequences of obesity include:

  • Hypertension
  • Fatty liver
  • Joint disease
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep apnea
  • Depression and anxiety

Obesity can also affect your overall quality of life and may lead to chronic body pain that makes it difficult for you to manage day-to-day tasks.

How is obesity treated?

Dr. Carson is a board-certified obesity physician and takes a proactive and personalized approach to treat the disease. The goal of your obesity treatment is to help you achieve a healthier weight and live a more active life.
