It may surprise you to learn that more Americans are overweight than not. About two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. This fact has enormous health consequences.
When you are overweight or obese, you’re more susceptible to a host of chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea, each of which can be life-threatening. However, none of that is likely news to you; most people are aware of the dangers of carrying extra pounds.
Dr. Latisa Carson and her team at Uniquely Fit Medical Weight Loss are dedicated to helping you reach your weight loss goals and improve your health, safely and for the long term. We use a variety of tools, depending on your needs, but one of our most successful programs is LeanMD®, a medically supervised weight loss plan that includes a weight loss phase, a coaching phase to help you keep the weight off, and a plan for your future.
What to expect
Many people are curious about what’s different about medical weight loss. There are several differences between commercial or traditional weight loss programs and medically supervised programs.
The first difference is the fact that Dr. Carson gets to know you, personally and physically. During your first visit, you complete a detailed questionnaire so that she can understand your overall health and your history of weight loss/gain, and so that she can address any specific concerns you may have.
That first visit also includes a thorough physical exam, including bloodwork and measurements. Depending on your health and her findings, Dr. Carson may suggest additional tests to rule out potential underlying conditions.
Once you’ve filled out the questionnaire, and Dr. Carson has completed her exam, she begins to create a plan for you. You meet with her to discuss your goals and to refine a weight loss plan that is tailored exactly to you.
The first stage of the LeanMD program is called Reach, and it’s the active weight loss part of the plan. You have a loss mentor who helps you understand nutrition and develops menus for you. You may need LeanMD shakes, supplements, appetite suppressants, or other tools to help you succeed.
After a month of sticking to the plan, you meet again with Dr. Carson and your loss mentor to discuss how you can add exercise to your routine, as well as other lifestyle habits that can help you reach your goals. You continue to have meetings and to receive coaching from your loss mentor throughout this stage.
The second stage of the program is Keep — as in keep the weight off. During this stage, you taper off any medications you may have been taking, and learn how to make sure your weight loss is for good. Too many people are stuck in a cycle of losing and gaining weight, and this stage helps you get out of that cycle.
The final stage of the plan is Live. Once you’ve met your goals, developed healthy habits, and learned how to maintain them, it’s time to enjoy your life to the fullest!
